The trek to the ships was slow. Even though Sabastian had lit up the route he still insisted on flying ahead in case something went wrong. He noted, with some trepidation that even the Klingons were following in line bringing up the rear. With each marker they passed Sabastian's restlessness in the skiff grew. He couldn't get Poe's face out of his mind about something going wrong.
He shook it off and continued down the path. When all the shuttles made it were docked and the hiss of the airlock seals was complete only then did he let out a sigh.
The transport buzzing. People had seen them and had come to greet them. Begging to get off the ship. Watching the Klingons take charge and scare the people back was a double edged sword. They scared the people and he wanted to vent them but they kept order.
A big Klingon walked over to him. “I am Korth, second officer.”
Sab smiled. “Hi! I’m Sabastian Walker Chief Engineer and mission guide.”
“Are you not the first officer of this ship as well.”
“The Arcadia…technically…long story but good to meet you. Thanks for your um… help.”
The Klingon made a disgusted sound in the back of his throat. “If my mend were not here there would be chaos.”
“Ohh a little chaos now and then never hurt anyone.” He smiled. “I’ve got Hunt and a few other pilots loading the women and children first. Shuttle four will take wounded and you all have the live and kicking people.”
The Klingon sneered. “Afraid we’ll eat the others?”
“No but if they are injured or have a weak constitution then the smell on your ships will be detrimental.”
Korth snorted. “You are either brave or stupid talking to me like that?”
Sabastian grinned. “Can’t I be both?”
Korth brew his head back and laughed. “Yes, my friend you can.” He turned and barked orders to his med. “Let us get the first group of shuttles loaded. I will leave two men behind and suggest you do as well to prepare the next group so that this can be over quickly.”
“Agreed.” He turned and headed towards the pilots. It didn’t take him long to relay what they were doing and the people, scared, tired, wounded somehow pulled together the strength to help. The first shuttles left the ship promising to return quickly and headed back to the Arcadia. The trip would take a good hour and then two to unload and then back out they went without stop.
He held his breath the entire time he lead the shuttles back to the ship and he stayed out flying the parameter of the field until the shuttles were empty and ready to head back.
The second trip was more organized and the Klingons added a fourth shuttle which oddly made him want to kiss them. They were being…quite polite and helpful. Something was off … or was that him just disliking the Klingons in general.
He shook his head. “Peace. They want peace as bad as we do.” He said to the skiff.
The trip back to the transport was faster. The pilots now taking things a with a little more confidence. The second load emptied the rest of the wounded, those in less danger. Again the trudged back slower, since they were now carrying precious cargo again and again they emptied the shuttles then went back for what they knew would be the final time.
When they docked again for the third time Sabastian was pretty confident that the pilots could load and return by themselves. He went to find Hunt who had taken a team to search the transport one final time.
Korth stook off to the side as his men loaded the Klingon shuttles. They would be full faster and would launch first. He looked over at his right hand. “Is the final surprise ready?”
The Klingon sneered. “Yes. Since this is the final run all he ships are launching when full.”
The man gave a nod. “How can you be certain things will unfold as we wisht them to?”
Korth smiled. “Because I will ensure it. Now go.”
Korth turned and walked towards Walker. “Commander Walker. My ships are getting ready to leave. We will ensure that your crew gets to the Arcadia. May I make a suggestion?”
Sabastian smiled. “Sure Kor.”
The Klingon sneered. “Korth not Kor. I will stay and my shuttle will go ahead of the last few of your people that are left. We have two of your shuttles here and one of mine, all others are full and launching. I will take point if you can bring up the rear. I have… a bad feeling.”
Sab looked at the man. He echoed Poe’s words. “Yeah me too. Sounds like a plan. Listen. Thank you for working with us. Our people don’t always get along but your help here today goes a long way to starting the mending.
Korth gave a nod. “We are honoured. All here today are warriors who work to save those that are innocent. On this we can all agree.”
“For sure.” Sabastian gave the Klingon’s shoulder a squeeze. “If you’ll excuse me we want one final run of the ship to ensure nobody is left behind.
Korth bowed. “Of Course. If you permit I will assist.”
Sabastian smiled. “Look at us, working together.”
Korth sneered. “Yes.. I believe on Earth they say pigs have grown wings.”
Sabastian laughed. “You’re funny Korth. I’m glad we met.”
